Like most animals, dogs are creatures of habit who like stability and familiarity. That’s why a move may add considerable stress to your pet – especially if it’s an environment that’s completely different from your current home. There are, however, a few things you can do to make the transition easier for your dog.
Stick to his usual schedule
Moving involves lots of change. So the more things you can keep the same, the more comfort you can bring to your dog. So if your pet is used to morning walks, be sure to remember to stick to this schedule. Try to do this for at least two weeks before you introduce any additional changes to your dog’s schedule. Taking your pet out regularly for walks will also help it establish familiarity in the new surroundings.
Check out the neighbourhood
If you’re moving to a new hood, be sure to check ahead if there vets in the vicinity in case your pet needs urgent medical attention. Another good tip is to check with your new neighbours if there are any aggressive dogs around which you may want to keep your pet away from. It’s a good idea to do this before the actual move, so there will be no surprises once the move is complete.
Don't throw away your pet's stuff
It’s understandable to want to throw your old stuff to make way for the new in your new home. But when it comes to helping your pet settle in, it’s a good idea to hold back on replacing all your pet’s items – the bed, water bowl, toys, etc. These familiar objects will help to calm your pet in a new environment, which can be confusing and disorienting.
Spend quality time with your pet
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of moving to a new home, but remember, your dog also needs the love and attention. Spending additional time with your pet in the new home signals to your pet that this is where you’ll be henceforth.
Let your dog adjust at his own pace
Some dogs take a while to adjust so try to resist the urge to speed up his process by ignoring or shouting at your pet when it misbehaves. Some dogs will only need a day or two, while others may need up to weeks or months. Be patient and show your pet the love it needs to settle into the new home.
