Keppel Land launches programme in collaboration with Sustainable Singapore Gallery to raise public awareness on the impact of rising sea levels

Keppel Land Limited (Keppel Land), in collaboration with the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, which is managed by PUB, today launched a public outreach programme, named ‘R.I.S.E. to the Challenge’, aimed at raising awareness on the pressing environmental issue of rising sea levels, as well as the urgent need for climate action.

Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event held at the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, which was also attended by Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation and Chairman of Keppel Land, and Mr Tan Swee Yiow, CEO of Keppel Land.

Mr Tan Swee Yiow, CEO of Keppel Land, said, “Today, countries around the world are feeling the adverse effects of climate change. Singapore, as a low-lying island city state, is especially vulnerable to rising sea levels. As a leading sustainable developer, Keppel Land adopts a holistic approach towards corporate social responsibility with a focus on environmental stewardship and social responsibility. We are committed to contributing both to the global fight against climate change and to Singapore’s sustainability efforts. Through this collaboration with the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, we hope that the ‘R.I.S.E. to the Challenge’ outreach programme will raise public awareness on the causes and dire consequences of rising sea levels, as well as encourage active steps to be taken to combat its effects.”

The ‘R.I.S.E. to the Challenge’ programme, managed by Terra SG, a social enterprise, comprises a series of exhibitions and engagement workshops covering a wide range of issues related to rising sea levels, including its contributing factors, consequences, mitigating actions and adaptation measures. Beyond the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, the exhibitions will be brought to various commercial properties in Keppel’s portfolio and 24 schools in Singapore as roving exhibitions over the next two years. The programme is expected to reach out to some 200,000 individuals in Singapore, including schoolchildren, tenants and members of the public, and encourage them to do their part to combat climate change, such as through digital pledges.

Keppel Land is a signatory of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. In addition, Keppel Land has adopted six of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are most aligned with its business, and has established stretch targets as well as aligned its strategies with these six SDGs, which were identified based on the Company’s potential impact on and ability to contribute to these goals.

The ‘R.I.S.E. to the Challenge’ programme follows the successful completion of the BCA-Keppel Land Public Outreach Programme in Singapore, GreenSeeds, in 2019. Over the three-year GreenSeeds programme, nine schools created green spaces within their compounds as part of their efforts to raise awareness on upcycling, conservation and resource efficiency. The programme reached out to about 35,000 students and members of the public through a total of about 140 events during its run.
