SG Community Cares: Singapore businesses unite to support Vietnam Yagi response
Vietnam, 13 September 2024 – Singapore businesses operating in Vietnam have come together under an “SG Community Cares” initiative to provide essential support to the communities affected by Typhoon Yagi. In a demonstration of solidarity and compassion with the Vietnamese people, the companies have pledged a total of VND1.9 billion in coordination with the Singapore Embassy in Vietnam.
Typhoon Yagi is the most severe storm to hit Vietnam in decades, and has resulted in widespread destruction and the tragic loss of lives from flooding and landslides. The funds raised by SG Community Cares will be used to provide aid and supplies, and support relief and recovery efforts in storm-hit areas.
Keppel Ltd. is among the Singapore companies contributing to this important cause, alongside CapitaLand Development (Vietnam), Mapletree, Sea Limited, Sembcorp Industries, United Overseas Bank (Vietnam) and YCH Group.
Welcoming the contribution, His Excellency Jaya Ratnam, Ambassador of Singapore to Vietnam, said, “I am very proud to see Singapore businesses come together under Singapore Community Cares to lend support to Vietnam at a difficult time for them. Typhoon Yagi has had a devastating impact on so many lives across Northern Vietnam. Singapore stands in solidarity with our friends in Vietnam.”
Mr Joseph Low, President, Real Estate (Vietnam) of Keppel Ltd., said, “Keppel strongly believes in contributing to communities in markets where we operate. As a pioneer and one of the largest foreign real estate investors in Vietnam, Keppel has stood together with the community to overcome various challenges over the past three decades. We are glad to join hands with fellow Singapore companies to support efforts to help the communities affected by Typhoon Yagi recover and rebuild.”
Keppel entered Vietnam more than three decades ago and has grown to become one of the largest foreign real estate investors in the country, with more than 20 projects and total registered investment capital of about USD3.5 billion. The company is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen, contributing to and enriching the lives of local communities wherever it operates.
Since 2021, Keppel has contributed over VND13 billion to communities in Vietnam and clocked nearly 6,500 hours of volunteer service in the country through about 30 CSR initiatives. These include the Living Well clean water initiative to provide better access to clean water for the villagers in the Mekong Delta region, and the Words on Wheels mobile library programme which helped raise literacy levels among students in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by providing them with convenient access to reading and audio-visual materials as well as the internet. These have touched the lives of some 83,000 beneficiaries in a total of 10 provinces across Vietnam.
