Keppel’s Living Well initiative brings clean water to villagers in Ca Mau province
Ca Mau, 30 August 2023 – Keppel, a Singapore-headquartered global asset manager and operator, will offer over 10,000 people in the drought-affected Ta An Khuong commune in Dam Doi district of Vietnam’s Ca Mau province access to clean water as part of the Company’s Living Well initiative.
Through the Living Well initiative, Keppel seeks to improve lives by providing clean water to communities in need. Since its launch in 2022, the Living Well initiative has brought clean water to over 43,000 people in need across Vietnam and India, and is expanding to more countries where Keppel is present. In Vietnam alone, some 40,000 villagers in Tien Giang and Ben Tre, two of the most drought-stricken areas in the Mekong Delta, have benefited from Keppel’s initiative.
The launch ceremony in Ca Mau province was officiated by Mr Nguyen Ngoc Thuan, Deputy Secretary of Ca Mau Provincial Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and Mr Adris Bin Isnin, Head of Project Management and Sustainability, Keppel’s Real Estate Division in Vietnam. The water filtration system is ready for use and can produce up to 6,000 litres of clean water per day for domestic usage.
Mr Adris Bin Isnin said, “At Keppel, we seek to uplift communities, wherever we operate. We are heartened to be able to make a difference to the lives of the drought-affected community in the Ca Mau province through the Living Well initiative, which harnesses the capabilities of Keppel to provide sustainability solutions. With the support of Tien Phong Newspaper, this project took a year of planning, including land surveys, inspection and testing of the systems, and we are very pleased that it is now ready to serve the community in Ta An Khuong.”
Mr Trinh Van Phen, President of Ta An Khuong Commune People’s Committee, said, “Over the years, the residents of Ta An Khuong commune have consistently been facing the issue of clean water scarcity for their daily needs. We are thankful that Keppel’s Living Well initiative will significantly improve the quality of life of the people here through offering better access to clean water.”
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the El Niño, which is a naturally occurring phenomenon of periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern regions of the Pacific Ocean, has been in effect since the start of June. It is projected to grow in strength through the end of this year and is likely to persist into the following year.
Due to its coastal location, Ca Mau province is an area without supplementary freshwater sources. The majority of freshwater for domestic and agricultural production purposes comes from rainwater and groundwater. When El Niño occurs, it leads to land subsidence, saltwater intrusion, challenges for forest fire prevention and control, and greatly impacts agricultural production and the daily life of the residents.
Keppel entered Vietnam more than three decades ago and has grown to become one of the largest foreign real estate investors in the country, with more than 20 projects and total registered investment capital of about USD3.5 billion. The company is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen, contributing to and enriching the lives of local communities wherever it operates.
