Keppel donates solar powered water filtration systems to water scarce villages in Vietnam

Over 18,000 villagers in the Mekong Delta region gain access to clean water as part of Keppel’s expanded Living Well initiative.

Hau Giang and Soc Trang, Vietnam, 22 March 2025 – Keppel Ltd. (Keppel), in collaboration with Tien Phong Newspaper, has expanded its Living Well initiative in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region with the provision of new solar-powered water filtration systems to the Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces. These water filtration systems can produce a total of 12,000 litres of clean water per day for domestic use, benefitting over 18,000 villagers in these two provinces affected by saltwater intrusion.

Keppel's integration of solar panels with the water filtration systems ensures reliable power supply for water production, particularly during dry seasons, when reduced hydropower generation and higher power demand lead to electricity shortages. These enhanced systems are capable of providing a continuous supply of clean and safe water for domestic use throughout all seasons. Powered by renewable energy, this initiative not only ensures an uninterrupted water supply but also strengthens the community’s resilience to climate change.

The handover ceremonies, organised in Hau Giang province (Hoa Tien commune of Vi Thanh city) and Soc Trang province (Song Phung commune of Long Phu district), were officiated by Mr Nguyen Huu Nghia, Deputy Secretary of Hau Giang Youth Union, Mr Huynh Quoc Quy, Deputy Secretary of Soc Trang Youth Union, Mr Joseph Low, President, Real Estate Division (Vietnam), Keppel, together with Mr Ly Thanh Tam, Chief Representative of Ho Chi Minh City office of Tien Phong Newspaper.

Mr Joseph Low said, "Since its launch in 2022, Keppel’s Living Well initiative has helped to alleviate water scarcity caused by climate change in the Mekong Delta region, improving the lives of some 88,000 individuals across six provinces in Vietnam. The expansion of our initiative in 2025 is especially meaningful as it coincides with World Water Day, underscoring our commitment to sustainability and empowering our local communities to be more climate resilient."

Mr Le Van Nhan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the People’s Council of Hoa Tien commune, shared: “Every year, our commune faces a shortage of clean water for daily use and consumption due to increasing contamination of groundwater with salinity. Using unsafe water can pose health risks to the community. That’s why the Living Well project, jointly implemented by Keppel and Tien Phong newspaper and with support from the Hau Giang Youth Union, is such a meaningful and essential initiative, one that local residents and students have eagerly anticipated for a long time.”

Mr Tran Huu Thanh, Deputy Secretary and Chairman of the People’s Committee of Song Phung commune, shared: “The Living Well project not only provides clean water to our community but also brings emotional value. From now on, the people of Song Phung commune finally have access to safe water for daily use.”

Keppel’s Living Well initiative was launched in Ben Tre, Vietnam in 2022 to support communities affected by saltwater intrusion in mitigating water scarcity. Building on the success of the programme in Vietnam, Keppel has expanded its Living Well initiative to the Indian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra, benefitting approximately 9,000 residents.
