Keppel's Living Well initiative to benefit 20,000 more villagers in the Mekong Delta
Ben Tre and Tra Vinh, 22 March 2024 – Keppel, in collaboration with Tien Phong Newspaper, has expanded its Living Well initiative in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region with the implementation of two new water filtration systems in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh provinces. These water filtration systems can produce up to 12,000 litres of clean water per day for domestic usage, benefitting some 20,000 villagers in these provinces.
Keppel’s Living Well initiative was launched in 2022 to support communities affected by saltwater intrusion in mitigating water scarcity. Including this latest expansion, the Living Well initiative has benefitted about 70,000 individuals in seven communes across Vietnam to date. Building on the programme’s success in Vietnam, Keppel also expanded its Living Well initiative into India’s Karnataka state in 2023.
The handover ceremonies, organised in Ben Tre province (Tan Thuy commune of Ba Tri district) and Tra Vinh province (Ham Giang commune of Tra Cu district), were officiated by Mr Tran Kim Phang, Vice President of the Vietnam Youth Federation of Ben Tre province, Mr Wong Wai Foo, Head, Sustainable Urban Renewal, Real Estate (Vietnam), Keppel Ltd., together with Mr Tran Ngoc Lam, Deputy Representative of Ho Chi Minh City office of Tien Phong Newspaper.
Mr Wong Wai Foo said, “Keppel is committed to leveraging its expertise and resources to make a difference to our communities as we create a sustainable future for all. We are pleased to expand our Living Well initiative, in conjunction with World Water Day, to help more communities get access to clean water.
“We would like to thank the local authorities and Tien Phong Newspaper who have supported us in making Living Well possible. Through this initiative, we also hope to help raise public awareness of climate change, which is one of the key causes of drought and saltwater intrusion.”
El Niño has been exacerbating the saltwater intrusion challenges faced by villagers in the Mekong Delta, particularly in provinces like Ben Tre and Tra Vinh, which are located in the eastern coastal sub-region of the Mekong River.
Ms Tran Thi Minh Chau, Vice President of Tan Thuy Commune People’s Committee, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province, said, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Keppel and Tien Phong Newspaper for their care and support for the villagers. Their sponsorship and installation of the water filtration system in Ben Tre province have made a significant difference.”
Mr Cao Thanh Hien, Vice President of Ham Giang Commune People’s Committee, Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province, said, “As the water filtration system provided by Keppel is operational, it has significantly enhanced the availability of clean water to meet the essential needs of the residents in Ham Giang commune.”
