Keppel screens award-winning documentary “Closing the Loop” to promote a circular economy

13 April 2019

In line with the Singapore government's push towards a circular economy and in support of Earth Day 2019, the Keppel Group organised a public screening of the world's first feature-length documentary on the circular economy, "Closing the Loop", to a packed audience of close to 1,000 people at the Singapore Botanic Gardens this evening. The documentary showcases examples from around the world on innovative applications of technology, process improvements and labour solutions to design out waste and pollution. The screening was supported by the Singapore Green Building Council, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Interface and Veolia Singapore.

Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, was the Guest-of-Honour at the screening. The event was also attended by Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation and Mr Tan Swee Yiow, CEO of Keppel Land.

Mr Masagos said, "The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has designated 2019 as Singapore's Year Towards Zero Waste. We are working with industry and community partners to adopt a circular economy approach to resource management. Not only will this contribute to a sustainable environment, it will spur new research and technology, and create exciting jobs and business opportunities for our people."

Mr Loh said, "Keppel is committed to sustainability, both as a responsible corporate citizen, and as a provider of solutions for sustainable urbanisation. We hope that through showcasing documentaries like these, we can increase environmental consciousness and encourage everyone to be better stewards of our environment. Collectively, we can make a difference and shape a sustainable future."

Keppel Corporation is a signatory of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. Keppel has also incorporated the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a supporting framework to shape and guide its sustainability strategy. Keppel is committed to support efforts by the international community and the Singapore government in tackling climate change, and has made a public pledge with the Singapore Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to articulate its commitment to address climate change, including through having more eco-friendly features in its products, investing in green technology and increasing the usage of renewable energy.

Interface, which partnered Keppel for the screening, provided carpet tiles made from recycled materials to the audience to reduce the use of disposable mats. In addition, Interface also purchased carbon offsets for 1,000 audience members to neutralise the carbon footprint of the screening.
