Keppel Ltd. (Keppel), through its philanthropic arm, Keppel Care Foundation, has pledged $300,000 over three years to support Mandai Nature’s conservation efforts in Singapore. This includes a contribution towards Our Wild Neighbours (OWN), a nationwide outreach initiative programme that seeks to raise awareness and promote coexistence with native wildlife in Singapore.
The donation was announced this morning with a cheque presentation by Mr Ho Tong Yen, CEO of Keppel Care Foundation, to Mr Robin Hu, Chairman of Mandai Nature, which was witnessed by Guest-of-Honour Mr Dinesh Vasu Dash, Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Manpower, and Mayor of South East District, at the OWN Human-Wildlife Coexistence Carnival at Heartbeat@Bedok. The carnival is a flagship event celebrating community efforts to foster understanding, appreciation, and positive interactions between people and wildlife.
Mr Ho Tong Yen, CEO of Keppel Care Foundation, said, “Keppel recognises the importance of nature and biodiversity for human life and we are pleased to support Mandai Nature’s conservation efforts in Singapore as well as OWN’s initiatives to empower people to take better care of the biodiversity around our city. This donation is in line with Keppel’s efforts to practise good stewardship of the natural environment.”
Launched in 2022, OWN is a multi-stakeholder initiative focused on addressing issues arising from human-wildlife encounters, many of which stem from a lack of understanding and preparedness about Singapore’s native wildlife. Through educational events and activities, OWN fosters public understanding, encourages responsible behaviours around native wildlife, and inspires community involvement in conservation. Over the past three years, OWN has engaged more than 100,000 people through online channels and physical outreach activities.
Keppel’s donation to Mandai Nature will primarily go towards supporting OWN, including its operations, outreach efforts and volunteer training activities. Mandai Nature has been the principal funder of OWN and continues to serve on its Core Committee, alongside ACRES, National Parks Board (NParks), Otter Working Group Singapore and Mandai Wildlife Group. Other OWN partners include Herpetological Society of Singapore, Nature Society Singapore, Jane Goodall Institute Singapore, Singapore Wildcat Action Group, NUS Toddycats, Singapore Pangolin Working Group, Raffles’ Banded Langur Working Group and NUS Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.
Dr Sonja Luz, CEO of Mandai Nature, said, “We are thankful to Keppel for their generous support. This is more than a contribution. It reflects a shared commitment to building a genuine culture of coexistence where communities live thoughtfully alongside our local wildlife in shared spaces. With this support, Our Wild Neighbours can grow stronger, reach further, and encourage more people to be passionate advocates for local wildlife.”
Beyond OWN, Keppel’s donation will also support Mandai Nature’s broader conservation efforts in Singapore, spanning native species protection, capacity building, training programmes and more.
