Huawei and Keppel join forces to drive renewable energy innovation in Asia and beyond

13 May 2025

Huawei International Pte. Ltd. (“Huawei”) and Keppel Ltd.’s Infrastructure Division (“Keppel”), have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on renewable energy solutions, focusing on photovoltaic (PV) systems and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technologies. With the urgent need to meet rising demands for electrification and drive global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, this strategic partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions across Asia and other key global markets.

The MOU was signed by Mr Nate Luo Chuan, Vice President, Head of Smart PV, Huawei International, and Mr Poh Tiong Keng, Executive Director, EaaS of Keppel’s Infrastructure Division. The signing was witnessed by Mr Maxi Wang, CEO of Huawei International and Ms Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel’s Infrastructure Division.

The collaboration will see Huawei and Keppel jointly explore designing and developing innovative PV and BESS solutions tailored for identified projects including the interconnected power grids across the ASEAN region, low-carbon data centres and industrial parks, and digital energy management for hybrid energy systems. The PV and BESS solutions aim to reduce the carbon intensity of the identified projects, improve operational stability, optimise lifecycle costs and improve economic performance. When operational, the projects will be connected to Keppel’s state-of-the-art Operations Nerve Centre (ONC) at Keppel Infrastructure @ Changi in Singapore. The ONC leverages Keppel’s proprietary artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) solutions for real-time remote monitoring and control, and advanced performance optimisation.

In Singapore, both parties are collaborating on a demand response programme using a BESS developed at Keppel Infrastructure @ Changi. The BESS will allow Huawei and Keppel to further explore novel smart operations and maintenance solutions to enhance the reliability, performance and efficiency of renewable energy assets.

The partnership will also extend beyond Singapore, with both companies co-developing go-to-market strategies and rolling out renewable energy solutions in the targeted regions.

Mr Maxi Wang, CEO of Huawei International, said, “Our collaboration with Keppel is a bold but committed step forward in addressing the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. By leveraging Huawei's cutting-edge digital power technologies and Keppel's expertise in energy management, we are not only meeting the growing demand for renewable energy to support Singapore’s global leading position in green development – we are reshaping the future of energy innovation. Together, we aim to empower businesses and communities, drive economic growth and accelerate the global transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Ms Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel’s Infrastructure Division said, “Energy storage is essential to overcoming the intermittency of renewable energy systems. Through this partnership, we will harness Huawei’s digital power technologies and Keppel’s deep expertise in energy infrastructure to enhance the reliability and seamless integration of renewables with state-of-the-art energy storage. Together, we aim to develop advanced technology and engineering solutions that optimise life-cycle costs, enhance safety, and elevate operational excellence across the identified projects as well as new pursuits.”

This collaboration aligns with global sustainability goals and supports Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 by advancing renewable energy adoption and enhancing energy efficiency. It reflects the ongoing efforts of both Huawei and Keppel to deliver impactful solutions that enable businesses and communities to transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.

The abovementioned developments are not expected to have any material impact on the net tangible asset per share or earnings per share of Keppel for the current financial year.
